THE ELDER SCROLLS IV: OBLIVION REMASTERED Launches Without Mod Support

Oblivion Remastered is out now—but without official mod support. Console users are left out, while PC players must rely on community tools. Bethesda won't offer troubleshooting for mods at this time.

In a surprise move, Bethesda has shadowdropped The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion Remastered, earlier today and delivering the long-rumored upgrade to the 2006 open-world RPG classic. Available now across PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X|S, the remaster features upgraded visuals and modern gameplay enhancements—however, it’s launching without one major feature fans have come to expect: official mod support.

Console Players Left Without Mods

While PC players can still install mods as usual, Bethesda has confirmed there will be no official mod support—particularly for console users. This means console players will not have access to modding tools, curated mod marketplaces, or mod installation frameworks similar to those found in Skyrim, Fallout 4, or Starfield.

The official support page outlines this clearly:

“Mods are not supported for The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion Remastered. If you are experiencing gameplay issues while playing with mods, it's recommended you first try uninstalling your mods, then verify your game files on Steam, or the Xbox App.”

While Bethesda is not blocking or banning modding outright, it will not assist with troubleshooting or facilitating mod installation. This is a notable change, as previous titles included user-friendly mod managers and console integration for limited mod access. With this approach, Oblivion Remastered falls back on the more traditional, community-driven PC modding scene.

Modding Still Possible, But On Its Own Without Dev Support

Despite the lack of official support, the modding community is already gearing up for Oblivion Remastered. Historically, Bethesda titles have enjoyed strong community modding, with Skyrim topping Nexus Mods in both quantity and popularity. The original Oblivion still sits high on the platform’s rankings as well.

However, without dedicated tools or integrated support, mods for the remastered version may take longer to surface, and new modders might find the process more cumbersome. Still, experienced modders are likely to carry the torch, ensuring a steady stream of enhancements, content, and tweaks.

A Missing Staple of Modern Bethesda

Bethesda’s modern titles have included robust modding ecosystems. From Fallout 4 to Skyrim Special Edition and Starfield, the studio has embraced modding as a core part of its identity. Sadly Oblivion Remastered, however, will return to the roots of modding being a fully community-driven, uncurated, and independent activity for gamers looking to take their games to the next level.

Only time will tell if official mod support will be introduced in the future. For now, players eager to customize their experience will need to rely on external tools and manual installations from other players in the community.
