One of the joys players find in every
Super Smash Bros. title is anticipating new fighter announcements in hopes that their favourite character gets selected to join Nintendo's acclaimed crossover fighting series — especially in the last three entries; when characters from other non-Nintendo series began making appearances.
Players wanting to get popular characters from pretty much every series is somewhat justified, given that Nintendo has given them the possibility to have characters as varied as Cloud Strife, from the Square Enix's
Final Fantasy series, fighting against Ryu from Capcom's long-running
Street Fighter series.
Given that Capcom has already had Ryu, Ken, and Mega Man join
Super Smash Bros. Ultimate, players began speculating that the next Capcom character to join the roster could be Dante from Capcom's
Devil May Cry series — which has been getting a lot of positive attention lately due to the fact that
Devil May Cry 5 is just around the corner.
In a recent interview with VG247,
Devil May Cry 5 Director Hideaki Itsuno was asked if Dante joining the Super Smash Bros. Ultimate is a possibility at all. Itsuno made a valid point by suggesting that characters featured in Nintendo's crossover fighting series have a past with Nintendo consoles; a thing that the
Devil May Cry series as a whole doesn't have.
"
I’m pretty sure that they… all the characters in Smash at least have some game on a Nintendo platform, right?", replied Itsuno by also bringing up
Final Fantasy VII's Cloud Strife joining the roster, although he notes that there's a difference between Cloud and Dante;
Final Fantasy's reach history, as a series, on Nintendo consoles.
"
Well, that’s the thing. Devil May Cry has never been on a Nintendo platform. So it seems like the first thing to do would be to get Capcom to put Devil May Cry on a Nintendo platform in some way, shape or form – whatever game that might be."
Whether Dante from the
Devil May Cry series makes an appearance in
Super Smash Bros. Ultimate is still up in the air, but it is mainly the fans who have to start campaigning for the games to be released on the Nintendo Switch.
The
Devil May Cry HD Collection was re-released last year for the PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and PC so there's still time for fans to start asking for the collection to be released on the Switch. Let's just keep our fingers crossed for Capcom to listen to the fans and port the games to Nintendo's handheld hybrid console.
