For the second month in a row, Nintendo systems have accounted for two-thirds of all video game hardware sold in the United States. That's a pretty impressive number considering where Nintendo was at not long ago with the disappointing Wii U. Fast forward and Nintendo is riding high, with the Switch becoming the fastest-selling console in the company's history just about a month after it launched. And it's showing no signs of slowing.
According to NPD Group, which tracks U.S. video game sales, the Nintendo Switch was the number one selling video game hardware device in October. What's more impressive is that right behind it was the Super Nintendo Entertainment System: Super NES Classic Edition, a super-small retro console designed to look and feel just like the original ’90s home console. When combined with the Nintendo 3DS family of systems, Nintendo is simply dominating, accounting for two-thirds of all video game hardware sold in the U.S. for the second month in a row.
This news comes just after Nintendo announced that it expects to sell 14 million Switch units by the end of March 2018, which is up from their initial estimate of 10 million units.
Driving these sales numbers is a rather impressive lineup of games for the Switch, including Super Mario Odyssey, which emerged as the top-selling video game of the month on the NPD sales chart despite launching at the end of the month on October 27th. Mario Kart 8 Deluxe and The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild for Nintendo Switch finished 10th and 11th, respectively, on the list of individual game sales for the month.
Nintendo is said to be ramping up its production efforts ahead of Black Friday, but that doesn’t necessarily guarantee that the Switch will be easy to find. Do you plan on purchasing a Nintendo Switch this holiday season?
