In December of last year, former President of Nintendo Tatsumi Kimishima mentioned that the Japanese company expected to sell over 20 million Nintendo Switch units in 2018; after having a very successful fiscal year in 2017 thanks to the popularity of their new handheld hybrid console.
In 2017, at the end of the fiscal year, Nintendo revealed that they had managed to sell 17.8 million Nintendo Switch consoles, which was a few million shy of the 20 million the company had set for their 2018 fiscal year, but they were still confident they were going to be able to pull it off.
Now that we're in December of 2018, Nintendo of America Chief Operating Officer Reggie Fils-Aimé reaffirms that the company will be able to reach their goal of selling 20 million Nintendo Switch units;
especially since he has stated in the past that 60% of their revenue coems from the holidays—which considers the months of October, November, and December.
In a recent interview with Forbes, Fils-Aimé reveals that Nintendo is feeling confident about reaching their goal and their current momentum with the launch of this year's heavy hitters:
Pokémon Let's Go, Pikachu/Eevee! and
Super Smash Bros. Ultimate.
"
We’re feeling confident in our momentum and it’s not just a stellar launch of Pokémon, it’s not just what appears to be a stellar launch for Super Smash Bros. Ultimate. That Black Friday through Cyber Monday time frame was critically important to us, the remaining shopping days now through Christmas are critically important to us", explained Fils-Aimé whilst making allusion to the
massive success Pokémon Let's Go, Pikachu! and Pokémon Let's Go, Eevee! saw during Black Friday; becoming the fourth best-selling product right at the start of the holiday shopping season.
"
More days right after Christmas as consumers receive gift cards or take unwanted gifts and monetize into things like Nintendo Switch are important to us. So, this is going to be an ongoing effort to make sure that we drive our business forward through the balance of this holiday season but also the first calendar quarter as well".
Nintendo has steadily managed to gain momentum after the launch of
Pokémon Let's Go, Pikachu/Eevee!, which sold an impressive 3 million units(worldwide) within its first week since launch. Now that
Super Smash Bros. Ultimate seems to be breaking every kind of sales records around the world, thinks are looking up for The Big N, and Christmas will definitely help the company reach their 20 million Nintendo Switch consoles goal.
