Super Smash Bros. Ultimate released on the 7th of December and in a matter of a few days it had managed to
sell an impressive 1.3 million copies in Japan alone. In Europe, the game was also breaking records by becoming the
fastest-selling Nintendo home-console game of all time; which is an impressive feat in and of itself.
It doesn't stop there, as Nintendo recently revealed a list of the
best-selling games of the year on the Nintendo Switch, where
Super Smash Bros. Ultimate takes the first place as the best-selling non-Free-to-Play title, sitting comfortably in the fourth place after Free-to-Play titles
Fortnite,
Fallout Shelter, and
Paladins.
It turns out that Nintendo President Shuntaro Furukawa associates the success of
Super Smash Bros. Ultimate to long-time players who have been playing
Super Smash Bros. titles in the past, even more so than newcomers to the series.
The news comes from an interview with
The Sankei News, where he said that "
the people who’ve played Smash before are coming back for this one; that accumulation of players contributed to the initial push [in sales]. Shuntaro also adds that they need to continue selling "
and not get caught up in that initial momentum".
Furukawa then reminded us that Nintendo are still aiming to sell 20 million Nintendo Switch units by the end of their fiscal year, thinking that the number is "
a bit high, but's achievable. The first order of business, though, is to maximize sales during the holiday rush".
Nintendo still has to reveal the holiday numbers, but
Super Smash Bros. Ultimate has been selling extremely well around the globe, so it is likely that the game also helped boost hardware sales; getting Nintendo closer to their very ambitious goal.
