The
Super Smash Bros. series has become one of the most popular and profitable Nintendo series of all time, rivalling the likes of
Pokémon and even the
Super Mario Bros. series.
All of the success the series has seen over the years is owed to the very first
Super Smash Bros. title — released for the Nintendo 64 in 1999 — which saw characters from other iconic Nintendo franchises being pitted against each other; a simple but very effective concept that series creator Masahiro Sakurai came up with all those years ago.
The original
Super Smash Bros. was released exactly 20 years ago today, and Masahiro Sakurai has taken to Twitter to share his gratitude towards fans — who have made the
Super Smash Bros. brand a household name with their constant support.
As per Sakurai's tweet itself, it was translated by
Reddit user Lugia2453 and reads as follows:
"
Smash Bros. is 20 years old today! Over these 20 years, I’ve seen so many people enjoy this series in so many ways – at home, at hangouts, at conventions, even in business offices! Development has always been hard on me, but I’m supremely happy. Thank you so much for playing."
Legendary game worlds and fighters collide in the ultimate showdown—a new entry in the Super Smash Bros. series for the Nintendo Switch system! New fighters, like Inkling from the Splatoon series and Ridley from the Metroid series, make their Super Smash Bros. series debut alongside every Super Smash Bros. fighter in the series…EVER!
Super Smash Bros. Ultimate is currently available exclusively for the Nintendo Switch.
