Analysts Predict That The Next Playstation Console Could Cost $1,000 And Next-Gen Xbox Will Be Expensive

Industry analyst Michael Pachter predicts the PS6 could launch at $1,000 due to rising component costs driven by AI demand. Experts also suggest high prices may fundamentally change the console market.

Rising hardware costs and the growing influence of AI are raising serious questions about the future of traditional console gaming. Some analysts now believe the next generation of PlayStation and Xbox hardware could push prices so high that it fundamentally alters how most people play games.

Sony’s recent price increase on PS5 models has already signaled that the old model of affordable entry-level consoles may be fading. In previous generations, console prices typically dropped over time. This cycle, however, is being disrupted by component shortages, tariffs, inflation, and surging demand for high-end chips used in AI development.

During a recent episode of his Pachter Factor podcast, veteran industry analyst Michael Pachter addressed the issue head-on. He warned that AI-driven demand for components will continue driving console prices upward.

“I think that console prices are going to keep going up as long as demand for the components goes up for other reasons, so AI,” Pachter said. He went on to predict that Sony’s next console could launch at $1,000, a price point he believes will significantly hurt adoption rates. “$1,000 for PS6. Yep. That’s why we’re going to buy fewer of them. Absolutely going to happen. So higher prices are going to destroy the market. I agree with that,” he added.

Both Pachter and Mat Piscatella, Executive Director of Games at Circana, suggest that sustained high console prices could accelerate the move toward cloud-based gaming. Instead of buying expensive hardware, players might increasingly stream games, lowering the upfront cost barrier.

Piscatella noted that cloud gaming has not yet gained strong traction in the US, but that could change if consoles reach $1,000 or $1,500. He pointed out that the same AI data centers currently driving up RAM costs could eventually be repurposed to power cloud infrastructure. However, he also acknowledged that current internet infrastructure in the US is not ideally suited for widespread cloud adoption.

Cloud gaming still faces challenges, including latency issues, bandwidth requirements, and ongoing debates about game ownership. Despite these hurdles, it remains one of the most viable alternatives if traditional console prices continue climbing.

Current trends show mixed signals. Some consumers are panic-buying PS5 Pro units ahead of further price increases, while others express concern about the direction of the industry. Reddit threads reveal a growing sense of frustration mixed with resignation among gamers who feel squeezed by rising costs.

If the next generation of consoles truly launches in the $1,000 range, the audience for traditional hardware could shrink. This would likely push more players toward PC gaming, mobile platforms, or cloud services. While consoles are unlikely to vanish entirely, their role in the broader gaming ecosystem could shift dramatically.

Pachter and Piscatella both agree that the combination of component scarcity and AI demand creates a perfect storm that could reshape the console market for years to come. The next generation of hardware may end up being the most expensive yet, potentially marking a turning point where accessibility gives way to premium pricing.

For now, gamers are left weighing their options. Those on a budget may need to consider cloud services or PC alternatives sooner than expected, while dedicated console fans brace for significantly higher costs when the PS6 and next Xbox eventually arrive.
