If you finished Baldur's Gate 3 wondering what your companions did next, an official answer is on the way. Dark Horse Comics and Wizards of the Coast are launching an ongoing comic series that picks up after the events of Larian Studios' RPG, with separate story arcs planned for the game's biggest characters.
The first issue lands on February 24th, 2027, and Dark Horse has already confirmed which companions are getting the spotlight.
Which Companions Are Getting Arcs
Astarion goes first. His six-issue arc picks up after he has broken free of Cazador Szarr, and it sends him to Waterdeep, where a string of gruesome ritual murders puts him on the trail of a killer who might be coming for him next.
Karlach follows with a much longer story. Issues #7 through #18 will take the tiefling barbarian into the Nine Hells, a twelve-issue run that should be of real interest to anyone who spent the game worrying about her infernal engine.
Dark Horse says future arcs will then focus on Wyll, Shadowheart, Gale and Lae'zel, with other characters from the game making appearances too. The publisher has not shared which order those arcs will come in or who will write them yet.
For players, this matters because the companions' stories are not continuing in the game itself. Larian confirmed back in 2024 that it would not be making expansions or a sequel to Baldur's Gate 3 and moved on to new projects, so these comics and books are now the main way the characters' adventures continue. The series is produced with Wizards of the Coast, which owns Dungeons And Dragons and the Forgotten Realms setting where the game takes place.
Who Is Writing It
Astarion's story comes from Alyssa Wong, an award-winning writer known for Star Wars: Doctor Aphra and Deadpool, with pencils by Vincenzo Carratù. The two previously teamed up on Psylocke, and they are joined by inker Elisabetta D'Amico, colorist Valentina Taddeo and letterer Buddy Beaudoin.
Karlach's arc will be written by Becky Cloonan, whose work includes Somna and Four Gathered on Christmas Eve, with art by Francesco Scimonelli, who drew Dick Tracy. More details on that storyline are expected next year.
A Variant Cover Built Around Character Creation
Issue #1 costs $4.99 and is available to preorder from local comic shops now. The main cover is by Gerald Parel, with variants from Scott Fischer, Angela Wu and Tyler Walpole.
The most fun option for players is the fifth cover. Dark Horse is releasing a blank variant that features the game's character creation screen, which feels like a fitting nod to the hours many fans spent perfecting their Tav before ever leaving the Nautiloid.
Anyone who wants an early look can find a preview of Baldur's Gate 3 #1 in Dungeons And Dragons #2 on January 6th, 2027. That issue belongs to Dark Horse's new flagship Dungeons And Dragons comic, which launches on November 4th and stars Mordenkainen.
Astarion Is Everywhere Right Now
The comic is the latest piece of the game's expansion into other media. Astarion's prequel novel, Baldur's Gate 3: Astarion by T. Kingfisher, arrived last month (September 29th) and covers his centuries of servitude under Cazador, with his game voice actor Neil Newbon narrating the audiobook.
Newbon also joined Wong at the Dark Horse booth during New York Comic Con earlier this month (October 10th), where the pair celebrated the upcoming series and Wong signed posters for fans.
Baldur's Gate 3 released in 2023 and went on to win Game of the Year at The Game Awards. Since every playthrough can end very differently, the comic will have to commit to one version of events, so it will be interesting to see how Dark Horse handles the companions' endings and relationships.
Which Baldur's Gate 3 companion are you most excited to follow in comics, Astarion in Waterdeep or Karlach in the Nine Hells?
