The Sega Mega Drive and Sega Dreamcast are turning 30 and 20 years—respectively—and, in order to celebrate, Sega has launched an
anniversary website that gives us information about both consoles, as well as featuring some neat pictures of the boxes they came in.
The Mega Drive—also known as Genesis in the US—was initially released in 1988 and was one of the two major contenders, alongside the Super Nintendo, during the 16-Bit era. Regardless of preference, both the Super Nintendo and Sega Mega Drive are considered to be the pinnacle of 16-Bit quality and are respected by the gaming community alike.
While the Sega Mega Drive site is the one active on the Sega Japan anniversary site, it is likely that the Dreamcast will get be updated soon. All of this makes us hope that Sega may want to make a Mini Dreamcast now that they have
announced that a Mini Mega Drive is on its way. Hopefully Sega doesn't have to rely on AtGames too much in the future given that some fans have expressed their disappointment at the quality of previous Genesis consoles from the manufacturer.
The Mega Drive and Dreamcast most certainly deserve the attention that Sega Japan is giving them and we're going to keep our fingers crossed for them to do something for their respective anniversaries outside of Japan.
