Square Enix CEO Reveals That The Company Is Working On Making Their Whole Library Of Games Available

Square Enix's Chief Executive Officer, Yosuke Matsuda, has recently revealed that they have heard fan demands for them to release their entire library of games digitally — which is something that fans have been wanting the company to do for a long time — and that they are working on it.

In an interview with GameInformer, Matsuda said that they are "working on that in a variety of ways", and that it is a request that they hear quite often.

"As far as our major titles go, most of those, we still have variations out that you can play now. The more classic titles that you might have played on NES, we are still working hard to make it so you can play those. We actually have launched a dedicated project internally to port those, so we are working to make them available on a variety of platforms. Certainly down the road, we would like to see that on a subscription or streaming service, so we're exploring the possibility of creating a dedicated channel for ourselves."

This is great news for fans of Square Enix, as the library is quite extensive and most of the classic titles are currently impossible to find; with some players even spending crazy amounts of money for games that have simply not been released in decades.

Matsuda also reveals that, since they are currently working on this, they still don't know in which way or form they will be releasing these titles; hinting that it could end up being in the form of an online service."I think everyone is going in that direction, so we do want to be proactive in considering those options. We still don't know if it would be a subscription service or an exclusive downloading service or what form it might take, but we do want to leverage our catalog."

There is one thing, however, that has become rather problematic when trying to make their whole library available in digital form, and that is the fact that they don't currently have the codes for some of these games, Matsuda admits.

"I'm embarrassed to admit it, but in some cases, we don't know where the code is anymore. It's very hard to find them sometimes, because back in the day you just made them and put them out there and you were done – you didn't think of how you were going to sell them down the road. Sometimes customers ask, 'Why haven't you released that [game] yet?' And the truth of the matter is it's because we don't know where it has gone."

Square Enix has been releasing games since 1986, with their first title — back when they were still called SquareSoft — being The Death Trap, so there are quite a handful of titles they've released ever since. Hopefully they figure out a way to make their entire library available for players.

Matsuda also didn't reveal whether this would also include titles specifically made by Enix before the SquareSoft/Enix merger, but this could well be the case given that both are just the one company these days. Regardless, this is great news for players in general.
