Due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, several events have been cancelled all over the world, and the video game industry has also been affected by this. In March of this year, in fact, it was officially confirmed that E3 was being cancelled on account of the pandemic; being the first time the event would not be hosted since 1996.
Some developers have managed to reveal some of their upcoming video games by flat out releasing unannounced trailers online, although a bunch of them have announced their games during special presentations like Nintendo's Direct presentations, the special PlayStation 5 reveal, and the Xbox Series X Game Showcase.
With all of the biggest video gaming events being cancelled this year, players have been wondering about the annual The Game Awards presentation. And we actually have some good news for those who enjoy this celebration of the video game industry as a whole.
As revealed by video game journalist and The Game Awards host Geoff Keighley, the 2020 The Game Awards is most definitely happening, although it will not be the same show with a live audience; it will be, instead, livestreamed like most video gaming events this year.
In a recent interview with IGN, Keighley explained that they are not even going to delay it, as it is still expected to be livestreamed in December; going as far as saying that this will be the biggest The Game Awards presentation yet, even.
"We have a very interesting plan for the show this year. We're definitely doing it. A lot of people are [asking], 'Are you delaying it? The Oscars are being postponed, are you postponing The Game Awards?' We are absolutely not. We'll share more in the coming weeks about it, but it's actually probably going to be our biggest show yet," replied Keighley when asked whether the event would be online.
"We are obviously not going to have 10,000 people in a room together, physically, for the show, but I think... you'll see a little bit of this with how we do GamesCom. We're definitely doing more than just me in a room, announcing winners. I'm really passionate about [still] doing the show live, versus something pre-recorded. So, yeah, we're working on some scenarios for ways we can present the show live with a bit of spectacle to people... without the public [being] able to buy tickets to come to the show, and things like that, this year," Keighley concluded.
So, there you have it. Geoff Keighly himself has confirmed that this year's The Game Awards event is a go, and that it will be livestreamed in a yet-to-be-determined date in December. Of course, details are rather vague this early on, but Keighley did promise that more information will be shared soon; all we have to do is patiently wait for more details about the event to be officially revealed.
