Earlier today we got an official announcement trailer for the latest entry in Sega and Ryū ga Gotoku's critically acclaimed
Yakuza series, as well as a release date for the now-called
Yakuza: Like A Dragon; expected to launch in Japan on the
16th of January.
One of the things that were also revealed, and it is quite literally a game changer, is the fact that
Yakuza: Like A Dragon's combat system will no longer be like in previous entries; opting to go for a more RPG-style turn-based combat system.
According to several media outlets, however,
Yakuza series creator Toshihiro Nagoshi has revealed that if
Yakuza: Like A Dragon doesn't get the reception the developer expects from fans, they may end up changing the combat system back to the more traditional action-based style the series has had since its inception.
While the combat in the
Yakuza series has been consistent throughout, the new game is also somewhat of a soft reboot. In a way, it's a good thing that this new title does things differently, especially since Kazuma Kiryu's story is already over; perfect time to change things up but keep the series alive.
Hopefully fans of the series embrace the new RPG combat system, since it is actually a way to keep things fresh for the
Yakuza series while, at the same time, keeping all of the other elements that fans have come to love over the years.
The latest numbered entry in the Yakuza series for PlayStation 4, this is the story of new protagonist Ichiban Kasuga. In the new setting of Isezaki Ijincho in Yokohama, the story of the hot-blooded thugs stirred up by Ichiban Kasuga will begin.
Yakuza: Like A Dragon will release in Japan for the PlayStation 4 on the 16th of January.
