Battlerite Royale, a MOBA/Battle Royale hybrid, which looks to be the first of its kind, is an ambitious new title released by
Stunlock Studios, creators of the free-to-play MOBA of the same name.
Battlerite Royale is still in
Early Access, but can be purchased for on Steam for
$19.99 USD $17.99 USD (10% promotion until October 3rd).
The game features matchmaking with either Single or Duo teams drop into a map and pick-up items and skills, like most BR-genre titles, and fight until there's one man, or team, left standing. The difference is that each character has their own set of skills, and one "Ultimate," a stronger skill with a long cooldown, that varies from each other, which randomizes the gameplay and difficulty with each engagement of enemies.
It's a refreshing take to a genre that has only been taken up by shooters, and I'm sure this won't be the last MOBA-style title to take a swing at it.
The game so far on Steam has "Mixed" reviews, based off over 700 as of this post. Many negative reviews talk of the imbalance of heroes and items as bringing over MOBAs certainly causes issues as there are specific roles, such as healing or tanking, that make it much harder to bring into a battle royale setting. Most positive reviews however seem to come from players who understand the predecessor,
Battlerite Arena, or understand that there is in fact a learning curve to not only understanding BR games, but also understanding the complexities of every hero.
All-in-all, the game has reached new player peaks every day since it's launch on
September 26th, reaching a new peak today at 6.8K, and hopefully, for the sake of the BR genre, it doesn't slow down anytime soon.
