A few days ago, we reported that Sucker Punch's recently released Ghost of Tsushima had topped the sales charts in the United Kingdom, beating Paper Mario: The Origami King, although failing to come even close to the number of copies sold by Naughty Dog's The Last of Us Part II.

Unfortunately, we didn't get any numbers, so it was impossible to tell exactly how many copies of Ghost of Tsushima had been sold at the time. We did know, however, that this number included both boxed and digital copies of the recently released title.

Today we hve some new information, which reveals that Ghost of Tsushima is currently breaking sales records in Japan, as the best launch week sales for any first-party title to release for the PlayStation 4.

This shared by Game Data Library, as reported by Famitsu, reveals that Sucker Punch's critically acclaimed Ghost of Tsushima has already sold an impressive 221,915 copies in its first week since release; breaking the record in sales that Kojima Productions' Death Stranding was holding.

For reference, Death Stranding sold a very impressive 185,909 copies in Japan during its launch week. Death Stranding is not a PlayStation 4 exclusive title, as the game has been announced for PC. Keeping this in mind, the previous record holder was Gran Turismo Sport with 139,357 copies sold in launch week; followed by Insomniac Games' MARVEL's Spider-Man(132,520), and Bend Studio's Days Gone(114,319).

Paper Mario: The Origami King also launched this past Friday, although Nintendo and Intelligent Systems' recently release role-playing game only managed to sell 100,909 copies so far; still a pretty impressive launch, but it doesn't come close to Ghost of Tsushima's number of copies sold. Our straw hats are off to you, Sucker Punch.

In 1274, the fearsome Mongol Empire invades the Japanese island of Tsushima and slaughters its legendary samurai defenders. Jin Sakai is one of the last survivors of a noble samurai clan. To combat his overwhelming foes, he must pioneer deadly new fighting techniques--the way of The Ghost--and wage an unconventional war for the people of Japan.

Ghost of Tsushima is currently available exclusively for the PlayStation 4.
