One of the most beloved board games of the late '80s is heading to PC. Nomad Games and publisher Balor Games have announced HeroQuest: Digital Edition, an officially licensed adaptation of the classic dungeon crawler made in collaboration with Hasbro and Avalon Hill. It is coming to Steam in 2027, with a closed beta playtest on the way.
The game was revealed during The MIX Fall Showcase on Friday (October 16th), alongside an official announcement trailer:
Four Heroes Against Zargon
HeroQuest: Digital Edition sticks closely to the board game's setup. The evil sorcerer Zargon wants to conquer the Realm, and only four heroes stand in his way: the Barbarian, the Dwarf, the Elf and the Wizard.
Combat is tactical and turn-based, with dice rolls deciding your fate. The Steam page lays out how each hero fits into the party. The Barbarian breaks through enemy defenses, the Dwarf searches for traps, the Wizard unleashes arcane power and needs protecting, and the Elf lands the finishing blow. Working together and positioning the party well is the key to surviving.
Solo, Co-Op Or Play As The Villain
The digital edition is designed to support up to five players. You can command the entire party yourself, or team up with up to three friends in online co-op, with each player controlling a hero.
The best part for longtime fans is that a fifth player can take on the role of Zargon. Just like the game master in the tabletop version, Zargon controls the dungeon's monsters and traps and schemes behind the scenes to stop the heroes. If no one wants to play the villain, the game handles Zargon for you.
That flexibility is what made the tabletop version special for so many families and friend groups. One person ran the dungeon while everyone else tried to survive it, and the digital edition is clearly trying to keep that social dynamic intact. Whether you are playing solo on a weeknight or hosting a full five-player session, the roles stay familiar.
There is also a Quest Editor for building your own adventures, and players will be able to share and download community-made quests through built-in mod.io integration. That should give the game plenty of life well beyond its main campaign.
Who Is Making It
Nomad Games has plenty of experience bringing tabletop games to screens, as it is best known for its digital adaptations of Talisman and for a couple of Fighting Fantasy titles. Balor Games is an independent publisher formed by former leaders of Humble Games.
HeroQuest was first published by Milton Bradley and Games Workshop in 1989, and it became a gateway to fantasy gaming for a whole generation of players. Hasbro's Avalon Hill brought it back earlier this decade, and it has since remade most of the original adventures while adding new quest packs, the most recent being Wizards of Morcar earlier this year. Fans who have been collecting those physical expansions will be watching closely to see how much of that content makes its way into the digital edition over time.
Release Details
HeroQuest: Digital Edition is coming to PC via Steam in 2027, and it is available to wishlist now. A closed beta playtest is coming soon, though no dates have been shared yet. Price and a more specific release window have not been announced, and the game has only been confirmed for PC so far. The studios say more details on the closed beta will be shared through the game's official website and social channels.
Would you rather lead the four heroes into the dungeon or sit in Zargon's chair and make life miserable for your friends?
