EA Motive's Iron Man game may or may not be shown off at GDC this month. There were reports this week that the highly anticipated action-adventure game would be part of "EA's Journey with Texture Sets" lecture at the Game Developers Conference on March 17th.
The original post on the GDC schedule, as spotted by users on Reddit, explained, "EA Motive and SEED have decided to tackle this problem head-on and will present their learnings developing "Texture Sets" for Dead Space, Iron Man, and more."
However, as outlets began to report about the possibility of the Iron Man game being at GDC, it appears the lecture's description has been updated. The post has now scrubbed all mention of the Iron Man game and now only reads: "EA Motive and SEED have decided to tackle this problem head-on and will present their learnings developing "Texture Sets" for Dead Space, and more."
The removal of Iron Man from description probably suggests the game won't be part of the segment. But in all liklihood, anything shown probably wouldn't be very substantial to begin with. We maybe would've gotten a glimpse of Iron Man's in-game suit, but that's probably it. There were hopes, however, that the inclusion of Iron Man would mean that we're one step closer to seeing an actual demo or trailer.
In any case, we may or may not see Motive's Iron Man this month, but I wouldn't bet on it now.
First announced back in September 2022, Iron Man is described as a single-player, third-person, action-adventure title. The game was in early development at EA's Motive Studio (Star Wars Battlefront II, Star Wars: Squadrons) in collaboration with Marvel Games.
The game will feature an original story "that taps into the rich history of Iron Man, channeling the complexity, charisma, and creative genius of Tony Stark, and enabling players to feel what it’s like to truly play as Iron Man," EA teased at the time of the announcement.
Unfortunately, since that announcement there hasn't been much revealed. Back in 2023, EA Motive offered a brief update, reiterating that the game was still "early in pre-production" and that they chose Unreal Engine 5 to be the game engine. This decision was made "in order to empower the dev team to work their magic and create something really special," Motive General Manager, Patrick Klaus explained.
Other than that, there's been little else regarding the game. In April of last year, it was announced that Motive was also assisting in the development of the new Battlefield game. It's one of multiple EA studios working on the first-person shooter alongside Criterion, DICE, and Ripple Effect. Klaus assured that development on the Iron Man game was continuing in parallel with the studio's work on Battlefield.
Last we heard, the studio made "excellent progress" on the Iron Man game, but we've still yet to see anything substantial. GDC would've provided us with something, but now it looks like that may no longer be the case.
