At this year’s E3 event, Naughty Dog and Playstation showed off a thrilling piece of gameplay from The Last of Us Part II that put the spotlight on Ellie as she fought her way through some unlucky folks. And while this demo earned a lot of praise, we shouldn't expect Ellie to tough it out alone for the whole game.
During a chat with Buzzfeed, Neil Druckmann revealed Ellie will have at least one NPC to accompany her, similar to how Joel had her in the first game:
"Well, so, Ellie used to be an NPC, but she’s the protagonist in this story, so the player is controlling Ellie. Umm, it’s safe to say with the game that we made in the past that there will be some NPC with you in this story, even though we’re not showing [the NPC] in this demo."
There are currently no details on who could fill this role, but it is possible we saw them in one of the cutscenes or cinematics released for the game. Already, some are speculating Ellie’s new love interest, Dina, or Joel himself could be a companion. Some even think the mysterious character in the PGW trailer is a candidate.
Whoever it is, between the Uncharted and The Last of Us franchises, Naughty Dog has shown they can deliver some loveable and memorable companions, so there's little to suggest they won't do so again.
