SONIC THE HEDGEHOG Movie Debuts On Rotten Tomatoes With Decent 70% Score On The Tomatometer

The live-action Sonic the Hedgehog movie has earned a 70% Tomatometer percentage rating based on 61 reviews. Here's hoping the score only continues to rise!

After an unusually extended production, the Sonic the Hedgehog movie finally arrives in theatres tomorrow. The upcoming film is based on the popular and iconic video game series and character of the same name. Ben Schwartz serves as the voice of the titular speedster while Jim Carrey plays Dr. Robotnik, James Marsden plays Tom Wachowski, and Tika Sumpter plays Maddie Wachowski.

Rotten Tomatoes is a review-aggregator website that takes into account a plethora of official reviews from across the web and melts them down into a percetange based on how many of them are positive versus how many are negative — as well as a consenus which attempts to sum them all up.

A total of 61 reviews have been counted for the Sonic the Hedgehog movie and 70% of them are positive. That's pretty great for a video game movie. The consensus is as follows: "Fittingly fleet and frequently fun, Sonic the Hedgehog is a video game-inspired adventure the whole family can enjoy -- and a fine excuse for Jim Carrey to tap into the manic energy that launched his career."

What's more; there are still reviews to come which means that the Tomatometer score could grow even higher — or drop further. Regardless, it's reassuring to hear that the Sonic the Hedgehog movie isn't an absolute trainwreck. You can check out the site's official announcement tweet below (via @RottenTomatoes):

The film follows the (mis)adventures of Sonic as he navigates the complexities of life on Earth with his newfound – human – best friend Tom Wachowski (James Marsden). Sonic and Tom join forces to try and stop the villainous Dr. Robotnik (Jim Carrey) from capturing Sonic and using his immense powers for world domination. The film also stars Tika Sumpter and Ben Schwartz as the voice of Sonic.
