Waypoint has gotten some very interesting information (via a document) regarding the sequel to United Front Games Sleeping Dogs that never came. The info is hefty and goes over in detail the new mechanics, the multiplayer, and the story that would've made up Sleeping Dogs 2. One feature the game would've had was to allow players to interact and control parts of Pearl River Megacity using their phones and the cloud. It was going to be designed this way so that anyone using the FTP mobile game would then gain interest in the console version.
The mobile feature of the game was also quite important, as players could manage the police force to control parts of the city, you'd be able to change which gangs controlled what parts of the city, and you'd even be able to summon a police patrol on your phone which would then cause a helicopter to patrol in-game. This was all part of United Front Games' "massively single player" concept, where what you did in your own version of this world, the crimes you stopped, the police you used, it would change the world of other player's games.
Here's an example of one of the many ways this feature would've functioned from the mouth of a developer who worked on the project:
"One campaign tasks players to go to the run-down gambling district to eliminate a triad that is controlling it. They meet a snitch that helps them throughout the experience. After players complete the campaign, the MSP decides that such action was enough to change the state of the district to a more stable one. They try another campaign later on that allows them to come back to the district, but now the snitch they met is a small business owner that gives them a discount in his store."
Overall the game was quite ambitious, and it's no surprise it got axed. But Waypoint has a source that says that if Square Enix wanted to give the green light on Sleeping Dogs 2, they'd give the project to Crystal Dynamics, a more proven studio than UFG.
So never say never.
