In what seems to be one of the most unlikely duos out there — at least when strictly talking about the video game industry — Samsung and Microsoft have joined forces in order to work on a cloud gaming service; a partnership that is "
one important step in our Project xCloud journey," Microsoft revealed.
Samsung revealed this information just yesterday at the Unpack 2020 event — in which they also unveiled their brand-new Galaxy S20 and Galaxy Z Flip mobile devices, and also revealed information in regards to their partnerships with Google, Netflix, and now Microsoft.
Director of Strategy at Samsung David Park explained that their partnership with Microsoft — more specifically with Xbox — seeks to work on a "
premium cloud-based game streaming experience," although he did not provide any further details on the matter.
Further information was actually revealed, later on, by Microsoft via a statement sent via email — in which a Microsoft spokesperson explained that they "
believe players around the world should have access to great, high-quality games on the device of their choice. Working with partners like Samsung is an important step in our Project xCloud journey and will help make game streaming more accessible for gamers. We look forward to sharing more later this year."
This information also agrees with some comments by head of Xbox Phil Spencer, who mentioned that
he sees Google and Amazon becoming part of the competition now that they have joined the video game industry. Microsoft teaming up with Samsung does sound like they're taking cloud gamin very seriously in order to take the lead this upcoming generation of consoles.
