STARFIELD: SHATTERED SPACE Expansion Coming This Fall; Bethesda Teases Another New Update Soon

It's been a while since Bethesda has had anything official to announce for Starfield. We've known since before the game's launch last September that it would eventually be receiving an expansion, and now Bethesda has provided a release window.

While speaking to Kinda Funny Games, Bethesda Game Studios director and executive producer Todd Howard revealed that Starfield's upcoming expansion, Shattered Space, will arrive later this year in the Fall. He also confirmed that there's another update for the game that is coming "really soon."

"This is a separate update," Howard said, referring to the yet-to-be-announced update. "Shattered Space is in the Fall, but we have a big update that's coming really soon for Starfield. It does a lot of stuff. We redid the map stuff so we have some city map stuff."

Howard also teased some "great stuff for shipbuilding," although it's unclear what he means by that. It sounds like we won't have to wait too long to find out as he revealed that the new free update will "get announced in a few days this week," ahead of the usual Steam beta.

Since its release last year, Bethesda has been working to clean up some of the bugs and fixing other issues that have popped up. Bethesda has maintained its previous promise of delivering new Starfield updates "roughly every six weeks." While these aren't major content updates, they do make the game a better overall experience.

Of course, most fans are waiting for the Shattered Space expansion which will add "new story content, new locations, new gear, and more."

Bethesda hasn't revealed any specific details, but Xbox is hosting its annual summer showcase in a few weeks, so we should hopefully learn more about the highly anticipated expansion then.

Starfield is sci-fi action role-playing game, and Betheda's first new intellectual property in 25 years. The game has incredibly high expectations and while it did receive generally positive reviews, I don't think it was quite the hit many were hoping it would be. The game currently sits in the mid-80s on Metacritic.

Surprisingly, despite its massive scope, Starfield was not nominated for Game of the Year at The Game Awards 2023. It was nominated for Best Role Playing Game though, but lost to Larian Studios' Baldur's Gate 3.

Starfield is currently available on Xbox Series X|S and PC.With Bethesda now under the Xbox banner following Microsoft's acquisition, it's unlikely to be released on PlayStation 5 at any time soon — although Xbox has been more open to bringing its games to additional platforms.
