Loot boxes are a hot topic within the gaming industry nowadays. Many people believe that they are an extortionate and predatory practice. Multiple governments have outright made loot boxes illegal. Developers are aware of the gaming community's increasing dislike microtransactions. Psyonix recently decided to remove them from Rocket League entirely — that's great!

However, some companies just won't have it and insist that loot boxes are included in games — likely because they bring in a substantial amount of revenue. EA notably attempted to appeal to the aforementioned governments which frowned upon the practice by instead labelling them "surprise mechanics."

After Call of Duty: Black Ops 4 launched in October of last year, Activision went ahead and added loot boxes and microtransactions. Based on a recently discovery that was found within the currently active Call of Duty: Modern Warfare beta, it seems that they plan to do the exact same thing again with this year's installment in the popular first-person shooter series.

A Twitter user named @NerosCinema called attention to the fact that there's a section of the beta's menu which is dedicated to the controversial microtransactions. We can only hope that they're not able to be purchased with actual money but rather only through gameplay. That or this section of the in-game menu is an artifact of a previous version of Call of Duty: Modern Warfare.

It's believed that they're not added to the game until a bit after its launch so that outlets will put out their positive reviews without a mention of any predatory practices. Though, after they were added to Call of Duty: Black Ops 4, many reviews were retracted and updated in protest.

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare will be coming to the PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and PC on October 25th, 2019.
