In July of this year, Microsoft's Phil Spencer revealed that the Xbox Series X, their long-awaited next-gen console, would not have any console exclusive titles for a while — which is the kind of news that Xbox players didn't want to hear at the time; or ever, for that matter.
Last month, Xbox players were left disappointed once again when Microsoft announced that the highly anticipated Halo Infinite would no longer be releasing this year as an Xbox Series X launch title. While Halo Infinite wasn't an Xbox Series X exclusive title, as it is also releasing on Xbox One, it was still pretty disappointing news considering that this is the first time an Xbox console releases without a brand-new Halo game.
It seems like Microsoft still isn't focusing on exclusive titles for the soon-to-be-released, and highly anticiapted Xbox Series X, as new information reveals that they are still not reliant on exclusives to promote the console.
"Having Halo at our launch would have been tremendous. But “we are not reliant on massive exclusive titles to drive console adoption. Our players will have thousands of games from four generations of Xbox available to play on launch day," recently revealed Senior Director and Xbox Platform Marketing Executive Cindy Walker.
This also agrees with Phil Spencer's comments on Microsoft's goal not being selling Xbox Series X consoles, as their approach is to sell their games on multiple platforms; these being PC, Xbox One, and even mobile phones via their new xCloud service.
It is also worth noting that this doesn't mean Xbox Series X will not be getting third-party support at launch — or, in the words of Spencer himself "for a while" — but it does mean that these games will be available on other platforms that aren't necessarily owned by Microsoft. It's a bold strategy, for sure, but it will be interesting to see if it pays off in the long run.
