Playtonic and Team17 have just announced that Yooka and Laylee will be back in a brand-new 2D platforming adventure, which will see the duo embarking on a challenging quest to rescue Queen Phoebee's Royal Beettalion Guard, in
Yooka-Laylee and the Impossible Lair.
The first
Yooka-Laylee is a game that was heavily inspired by the 3D adventure platforming titles of the 64-Bit era, such as
Donkey Kong 64 and
Banjo-Kazooie. It is, in fact, developed by the same team that worked on
Donkey Kong 64 and both
Banjo-Kazooie titles, which makes
Yooka-Laylee a proper spiritual successor.
While
Yooka-Laylee took inspiration from 3D platformers,
Yooka-Laylee and the Impossible Lair has taken a few pages from the
Donkey Kong Country Returns and
Donkey Kong Country Tropical Freeze books, making this
Yooka-Laylee sequel a 2D platformer through and through.
Yooka-Laylee and the Impossible Lair will also be featuring music from Grant Kirkhope — the same composer who wrote the music for the
Banjo-Kazooie series and
Donkey Kong 64 — and David Wise, who has composed music for the
Donkey Kong Country series and the more recent
Donkey Kong Country Tropical Freeze.
Playtonic revealed that
Yooka-Laylee and the Impossible Lair still doesn't have an official release date, but it is expected to release for the PlayStation 4, Nintendo Switch, Xbox One, and PC at some point
in 2019.
