Since arriving on Netflix last December, The Super Mario Bros. movie has been a mainstay in the streamer's list of most popular movies. But on October 2nd, the CG-animated hit will be leaving the streaming service.

Thankfully, we already know which platform will be its new home, and you won't have to wait long to watch it again. Peacock confirmed that The Super Mario Bros. Movie will arrive on October 3, 2024.

With all the contractual details that come with streaming rights though, the movie has bounced between platforms. But now it's finally coming home. Peacock, which is owned by Universal, was first home for The Super Mario Bros. Movie, landing on the platform in August 2023 after its successful box office run.

Based on Nintendo's beloved video game franchise, The Super Mario Bros. Movie tells the story of two Brooklyn plumbers, who are also brothers and best friends: Mario (Chris Pratt) and Luigi (Charlie Day). While working to fix a water main, the two are magically transported down a mysterious pipe and wander into a magical new world. Separated from each other in this new land, Mario embarks on an epic quest to find Luigi.

On his journey, he meets a cast of familiar, lovable characters, including Toad (Keegan-Michael Key) and Princess Peach (Anya Taylor-Joy). With Mushroom Kingdom facing a looming threat from the power-hungry villain, Bowser, Mario must tap into his own power and help save his friends.

The Super Mario Bros. Movie was panned by critics. It has just a 59% on Rotten Tomatoes, with critics writing, "While it's nowhere near as thrilling as turtle tipping your way to 128 lives, The Super Mario Bros. Movie is a colorful -- albeit thinly plotted -- animated adventure that has about as many Nintendos as Nintendon'ts."

The audience — and the movie's box office performance — tells a completely different story, though. The film sits at a 95% on the Rotten Tomatoes Popcornmeter. The positive audience reception resulted in a massive box office haul for the film. The Super Mario Bros. movie ended its theatrical run with $1.36 billion worldwide, making it the highest-grossing film of 2023.

The film's commercial success naturally led to Nintendo and Universal greenlighting a sequel, which will again be animated by Illumination. It was confirmed earlier this year that The Super Mario Bros. Movie sequel will be released in theaters on April 3, 2026. Directors Aaron Horvath and Michael Jelenic, who helmed the first movie, are returning.
