There's no denying that the Marvel Cinematic Universe is one of the biggest pop culture phenomena of the decade, so it's not really surprising that some brave filmmakers are willing to take a closer look at the so-called Marvel formula to hopefully repeat the Kevin Feige-produced movie empire’s success.
According to Writer Greg Russo, WB.'s Mortal Kombat reboot will be influenced by none other than the MCU. In a recent interview with Discussing Film, Russo said that it would be incredibly hard to make Kano, who's always cracking jokes in the games, a serious hero. "While there is violence and there is fighting and real stakes and emotional stakes for all the people involved at the end of the day it still should be fun and a sense of humor," he said. "As much as I hate to throw up the direct comparison to Marvel they’re still fun and always cracking jokes but obviously ours will be a bit more adult.”
The writer also confirmed that the original seven heroes from 1992's Mortal Kombat game will be "important," as "they’re important to any adaptation to this property.” Mortal Kombat launched with Johnny Cage, Liu Kang, Sub-Zero, Scorpion, Raiden, Sonya Blade, and Kano as playable fighters.
Russo is also scripting another video game adaptation, the Resident Evil reboot for Constantin Films, and just like that movie, the Simon McQuoid-directed Mortal Kombat doesn't have a release date yet.
