Variety reports that Uncharted landed at second place at the domestic box office this weekend with $10 million, pushing it past $100 million domestic. That's a solid result for the video game adaptation, and one that should give Tom Holland a second blockbuster franchise at Sony Pictures. While a sequel hasn't been officially announced, it's thought to be in the early stages of development.
$100 million might not sound like much, but in this "pandemic era," that's a fantastic result.
Talking of Holland, Spider-Man: No Way Home is still earning decent money too; that webbed up $4.3 million over the weekend, bringing its domestic cume to a spectacular $786 million. Believe it or not, the Sony/Marvel Studios threequel has remained in the Top 5 consistently since opening last year.
Despite early estimates suggesting The Batman would open between $110 million - $120 million, the DC Comics adaptation has exceeded expectations again with a $128.5 million opening weekend in North America. As only the second movie in this "pandemic era" to open north of $100 million, Matt Reeves' movie has been nothing short of a huge hit for Warner Bros.
It may not be on quite the same level as Spider-Man: No Way Home - that debuted to $260 million last December - but The Batman has obliterated the previous record holder for the second-biggest opening since 2019. Uncharted opened with $44 million last month, but the World's Greatest Detective's big screen return bested that during a single day.
With a $200 million budget, The Batman still has a long way to go before turning a profit, but as one of only a handful of Hollywood movies to secure a Chinese release, we're sure it will. In less than 45 days, it will hit HBO Max, and that's bound to drive up the streaming service's subscription numbers.
