Variety is reporting that former X-Men star James Marsden has signed on to star in Paramount's upcoming Sonic the Hedgehog movie. He's not expected to voice the title character, but he is instead believed to be the human lead. Further details on the role were unavailable.

Jeff Fowler, who was nominated for an Academy Award for the animated short film Gopher Broke, will direct with a script from Oren Uziel (22 Jump Street). 12 Deadly Days scribes Patrick Casey and Josh Miller submitted the first draft earlier this year. Neil H. Moritz (Fast & Furious) is producing the live-action/animation feature while Tim Miller (Deadpool) is serving as one of the executive producers.

Production is expected to begin later this year with a November 15, 2019 release date already set.

Marsden is, of course, best known for his role as Scott Summers/Cyclops in the original X-Men trilogy, a role he last reprised in the critically-acclaimed X-Men: Days of Future Past. He currently stars as Teddy on HBO's Westworld and his more prominent credits include, but are not limited to, Tour de Pharmacy, The Best of Me, Walk of Shame, Anchorman 2: The Legend Continues, Lee Daniels' The Butler, 30 Rock, Modern Family, Enchanted, and Superman Returns.
