The countdown is on for one of the most intense experiments in Old School RuneScape history. Jagex shared a full rundown of how Hardcore Worlds will work yesterday, and it is clear that one bad mistake will be all it takes to end a run.

Hardcore Worlds launch on November 4th, and the new details cover everything from how to get started to what happens after your character meets Death.

How Hardcore Worlds Work

Every player on Hardcore Worlds begins with a fresh character on Tutorial Island. Once you are there, you can find Death's Delegate standing near the Magic Instructor's house and Paul, the Ironman Tutor. Speaking to the Delegate will take you to Death's Office, where you can opt into the mode.

The worlds run at the same pace as the main game, with no XP boosts or shortcuts. Jagex is also treating them as permanent worlds, so this is a long-term home for players who want every decision to matter.

Unlike Hardcore Ironman, these worlds have a full economy. The Grand Exchange and trading are both available, so players can buy, sell and work together. Since everyone starts from scratch at the same time, Jagex expects the economy to feel very different early on, with the studio suggesting that 1M GP might feel like it did back in 2007.

What Counts As A Safe Death

Hardcore Worlds use the same death rules as Hardcore Group Ironman, which means a lot of content that is normally safe in the main game will end your run here. That includes activities like Barbarian Assault, Chambers of Xeric, the Fight Cave, the Inferno, Nightmare Zone, Pest Control, random events and dying inside a player-owned house, among others.

There are still some places where you can die without losing your status. Castle Wars, Clan Wars, Soul Wars, the fourth phase of the Fremennik boss encounter and the Fight Pit are all considered safe. The resurrection rewards from Achievement Diaries will also work as expected. Bounty Hunter and Last Man Standing will be disabled when the worlds first open.

What Happens When You Die

When your character falls, Death gives you two choices. The first option is a full reset, which wipes everything so you can start over from Tutorial Island. There is no limit on how many times you can reset.

The second option is to transfer your character to the main game permanently. You keep your bank and any protected items, but you will no longer be part of Hardcore Worlds. In both cases, any items left at your gravestone are gone for good.

Jagex also made it clear that Player Support will not restore Hardcore status after a death, so there is no appealing your way back in.

Escape Crystals Get A Big Upgrade

To help players survive a little longer, Escape Crystals are getting some meaningful changes. Every new character will start with one, and the price is dropping from 75,000 coins to 10,000. Death will now sell them as well, alongside Rick and the Mysterious Stranger.

Escape Crystals will also cure poison and burn effects when used, which could be the difference between surviving a bad situation and watching your run end in an instant.

World Firsts And A New Social Hub

Hardcore Worlds will feature broadcasts for World First achievements, so the whole server can see who gets there first. Major deaths will also be broadcast, including big moments tied to content like the Fractured Archive, the Fight Caves and Grandmaster Combat Achievements, as well as a player's very first death.

Death's Office is also changing. It will no longer be instanced, turning it into a shared social space where players can gather and, presumably, compare stories about how they died.

On top of that, the World Switcher is getting an overhaul with an engine update later in November. The new version adds filters, displays world activities, supports mobile and includes a compact view, which should make it much easier to find the right world.

Jagex summed up the mode with a fitting motto: "Dodge, Dip, Duck and Don't Die."

Are you planning to brave Hardcore Worlds on launch day, or will you stick to the main game where death is a little more forgiving?
