GTA V Was Reportedly The Most Lucrative Game Of 2017, Despite Being 4 Years Old

The most lucrative video game of 2017 wasn't Destiny 2 or Call of Duty, it was GTA V- thanks to its online multiplayer mode, Grand Theft Auto Online.

GameIndustry.biz has looked through a multitude of company financial statements and determined that Grand Theft Auto V (Grand Theft Auto Online) was the most lucrative game of 2017.  That is to say, it generated the highest profit (which is not the same as revenue).  

In total, the video game industry generated  $108.4 billion USD in 2017 across mobile, PC, console, VR and eSports. By comparison, the movie industry had a worldwide box office revenue of $39.92 billion USD.

Grand Theft Auto V, via Grand Theft Auto Online generated $521 million USD in profits for Rockstar, while Call of Duty: WWII came in second with $512 million USD in profits for Activision.  Two more Call of Duty titles also made up the Top 10, Call of Duty: Black Ops III and Call of Duty: Infinite Warfare.
