MarketWatch's latest report officially confirmed what we've known for quite some time -
Grand Theft Auto V is the most profitable entertainment product of all time, with more than 90 million copies sold across five platforms and $6 billion in revenue. The report primarly focuces on comparison with film, but it almost certainly encompasses books, music, and other forms of entertainment.
GTA V's revenue is far past the $4 billion achieved by best-selling films such as
Star Wars and
Gone With The Wind. Even the highest-grossing movie of all time (unadjusted for inflation...), James Cameron's
Avatar fails to match Rockstar Games' juggernaut. It's not clear whether the game's score is based purely on sold units, or if it also includes incomes from the highly successful multiplayer mode.
To match GTA V's numbers, Take-Two would have to combine the sales of GTA III, Vice City, San Andreas and GTA IV. Four years after the game's debut, GTA V was the sixth biggest selling game of 2017 in the US and the third biggest game in the UK and Europe. It looks like Rocktar's success won't be challenged by any other game anytime soon, and even Red Dead Redemption 2 is unlikely to match these sales.
When a young street hustler, a retired bank robber and a terrifying psychopath find themselves entangled with some of the most frightening and deranged elements of the criminal underworld, the U.S. government and the entertainment industry, they must pull off a series of dangerous heists to survive in a ruthless city in which they can trust nobody, least of all each other.
Grand Theft Auto V is available on PlayStation 3, PlayStation 4, PC, Xbox 360, and Xbox One NOW!
