Three years have passed since
MAFIA III was released for the PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and PC. Though that game wasn't too well loved, that doesn't mean Take-Two Interactive are going to outright bin the franchise.
On August 2nd, Take-Two filed for a trademark at the United States Patent Office (via
PC Gamer). It was for a stylised, text-based logo which read: MAFIA. Doesn't seem too interesting at first, however, the logo in question hasn't been used for any prior
Mafia games. Therefore, it must be for something that they've got coming down the pipeline.
The "Word Mark" was filed under Goods and Services which is the category to do with entertainment services such as video games, films, television programmes, and the like. Many have taken this as evidence that
MAFIA IV is in the works. This is despite the fact that
the installment was apparently cancelled by, Hanger 13, the developers of the series in favour of a new IP.
There is a chance that another studio picked up the fourth game after Hanger 13 dropped it and that's what the logo is to do with. However, it's more than likely got something to do with remasters of
MAFIA and
MAFIA 2 — as the trademarked logo does bear some resemblance with that of the original game and it noticeably doesn't include a number of any kind, much less a four.
1968. New Bordeaux, Louisiana. The rules of organized crime have changed. After years of combat in Vietnam, Lincoln Clay knows this truth: Family isn’t who you’re born with, it’s who you die for. When his surrogate family, the black mob, is slaughtered by the Italian Mafia, Lincoln builds a new family on the ashes of the old and blazes a path of military-grade revenge through the brutal criminal underworld responsible.
Mafia III is currently available for the PlayStation 4, Xbox One and PC.
