We haven't had any news about Greg Russo's upcoming live-action Mortal Kombat film in quite a while now. The latest news we heard about the movie came from actor Lewis Tan, who revealed that the film was doing Fatalities right; prior to that, nothing much has been shared.
Greg Russo's Mortal Kombat is still a few months away from releasing, as it is expected to hit theatres in January of next year. With that in mind, we should expect a proper trailer for the movie to drop any time now — which is quite exciting news for fans of the series who can't wait to see their favourite characters in the big screen.
This wouldn't be the first time that a live-action Mortal Kombat film has been released, since the first movie hit theatres all the way back in 1995. Interestingly enough, and for the longest time, many considered the 90s film to be the only good video game movie adaptation; and they were right.
Mortal Kombat(1995) was directed by Paul W. S. Anderson, and is still considered to be one of the best video game movies ever made. While the movie is cheesy and doesn't take itself too seriously, that's exactly the reason why many simply can't get enough of it; it captured the essence of the Mortal Kombat series perfectly.
With the new Mortal Kombat releasing in a short 6 months from today, one would wonder what is Paul W. S. Anderson's opinion on this new film, which is actually quite fair, considering that his movie is, and will likely always be, a cult classic at this point. Unsurprisingly, Anderson is actually quite excited for the movie, since he himself loves the Mortal Kombat series.
"I'm a fan of Mortal Kombat, so I wish them well, and I'm excited to see what they come up with. I'm going to show up as a fanboy," Anderson revealed during a recent interview with Entertainment Weekly.
Knowing that Paul W. S. Anderson is as excited to see Greg Russo's Mortal Kombat as any other fan of the series is actually quite wholesome in and of itself. Anderson's Mortal Kombat is a classic and fans have shown their support pretty much since it was released, so it is nice to see him showing that same support and excitement for Russo's movie.
Mortal Kombat is expected to hit theatres on Friday the 15th of January in 2021.
