MARATHON Players Can Now Venture In The New Cryo Archive Endgame Zone That Arrives Today

The Tau Ceti IV extraction grind in Marathon just got a lot colder and a lot more dangerous. Bungie revealed that players have collectively cracked the latest alternate reality game tied to Marathon, unlocking the game's first dedicated endgame zone: Cryo Archive. The abandoned UESC Marathon ship, silent for centuries after vanishing en route to Tau Ceti, now hangs in orbit as a frozen tomb packed with high-tier loot, deadly security, and the kind of contested extractions that define the genre at its best.

Cryo Archive opens this Friday, March 20th, 2026, and runs exclusively on weekends. It is built for trios of three Runners with matchmaking fill available for solo queue players who want to team up. To even queue, you need to hit specific prerequisites: Runner Level 25, all six factions unlocked through liaison contracts, and a minimum equipped loadout value of 5,000 credits (the gear's worth, not an entry fee). Meeting those requirements also grants a one-time Sponsored Kit from the Armory: a tuned blue-tier bundle designed to get new players through their first few runs without risking prized items.

The zone itself is a labyrinth aboard the derelict colony ship that left Mars in 2472 carrying 30,000 souls and never arrived. Cryo Archive is the first deck players can access, featuring six interconnected wings a cryopod storage, medical bays, supply rooms all linked by a central hub. Tight corridors open into massive chambers where enemy Runner crews, automated UESC security, and the ship itself seem determined to keep intruders out. The layout encourages layered strategy: solve environmental puzzles, manage security systems, and race other squads to unseal frozen Vaults before they do the same to you.

Those Vaults are the real prize. Seven high-security rooms scattered across the deck hold the most valuable loot in Marathon, including unique gold weapons locked in special cases and materials not found planetside. Accessing each Vault requires a specific Vault Key (dropped from high-risk activities on Tau Ceti IV or stolen from downed crews on the ship) plus completion of that Vault's unique challenge. Inside, tense interactions and timed puzzles unfold while rival teams close in, turning every successful breach into a frantic defense until extraction.

Extraction rules differ here too. Exfils are less predictable and more contested than on the surface, forcing squads to adapt on the fly. Security Clearance acts as the progression currency: interact with terminals, survive longer, and gain higher clearance to unlock better doors, supply caches, and escape routes. The higher the clearance, the more valuable the systems you can access.

For players who want guided objectives, Cryo Archive contracts refresh each weekend. Seven unique contracts appear in CyberAcme, and squads can re-roll to align on one shared goal. Completing a contract removes it from the pool for that week and rewards a random high-rarity item through locked room keys, Vault keys, rare materials, or top-end gear. Progress resets weekly when the zone reopens, but Codex advancement carries over permanently.

Speaking of the Codex, dedicated progress through Cryo Archive unlocks exclusive rewards. Top earners can earn unique styles (skins) for all six Runner Shells, the coveted Vidmaster title, and additional cosmetics that showcase mastery of the zone. These are permanent flex items that carry across seasons.

The Cryo Archive unlock itself came from community effort. Players spent weeks decoding terminals, chasing coordinates across official channels and social media, and piecing together clues in Bungie's latest ARG. The final door opened when the collective solved the puzzle, granting access to the UESC Marathon and kicking off this new endgame chapter.

Bungie has emphasized that Cryo Archive is a pinnacle activity with raid-style mechanics wrapped in brutal extraction stakes. Expect steep learning curves, intense firefights, and moments where everything can go sideways in seconds. It is not meant for casual runs; it is a high-intensity challenge that rewards preparation, coordination, and smart risk-taking.

If you have been grinding planetside zones and building your Shells, this weekend is your chance to step onto the derelict Marathon and chase the biggest payoffs yet. Grab your crew, tune your loadout, and prepare for the cold. The ship is waiting, and the Vaults are calling.

Best of luck out there, Runners. The silence in those halls is about to be shattered with a lot of gunfights. Will you be victorious?
