Bungie has released a new update for Marathon, with patch 1.0.5.3 focusing on combat balance adjustments and quality-of-life fixes. The small but targeted patch arrives as the extraction shooter continues to evolve based on player feedback, just days before a larger mid-season update scheduled for April 14.
Since its March 2026 launch, Marathon has received steady improvements, but recent reports show player counts beginning to decline. With Season 1 approaching its midpoint and Season 2 set to launch in June, Bungie is using these incremental updates to address pain points while preparing bigger content additions.
Key Changes in Update 1.0.5.3
The patch makes meaningful tweaks to two popular combat elements: the Bubble Shield and melee damage.
Bubble Shield
- Increased rarity from Deluxe (blue) to Superior (purple), making it less common, especially on early maps.
- Reduced bubble HP by 33%.
- Removed vulnerability to Volt weapon damage.
- Increased resistance to UESC damage by 17%.
Melee Combat
- Reduced maximum bonus damage from the Melee Damage stat against enemy Runners from 100% to 50% (damage against non-Runners remains unchanged).
- Knife lunge distance reduced by approximately 10%.
- Knife targeting angle reduced by approximately 20%.
In the developer notes, Bungie explained that melee is meant to be a high-risk, high-reward option for close-quarters fights against shotguns and SMGs. However, players were reaching maximum effectiveness too quickly, reducing the value of buildcrafting and upgrades. The changes aim to keep melee powerful while requiring more thoughtful investment and positioning.
Additional Fixes
- Fixed additional grapple-related slide cancel exploits for the Thief class.
- Fixed issues where the Vault and Armory sometimes appeared empty.
- Fixed inconsistent appearance of Armory item refreshes and free daily items.
- Removed the “in a single run” requirement from Traxus Return On Investment contract 4/5.
- Fixed an exfil countdown reset bug on the Cryo Archive map.
Over the weekend, Bungie also applied a significant nerf to the popular Biotoxic Disinjector endgame weapon, reducing its damage by 35%. Game director Joe Ziegler addressed the change on social media, noting that the weapon had become too dominant and was widening the gap between players who had it and those who did not. He indicated that further adjustments may follow as the team continues monitoring balance.
Update 1.0.5.3 serves as a tune-up ahead of the bigger mid-season content drop on April 14. With Season 2 scheduled for June, Bungie is expected to introduce new maps, operators, contracts, and possibly new equipment or weapons to help regain momentum.
The extraction shooter genre relies heavily on a healthy player population, and recent dips have raised concerns among fans. However, the steady stream of balance patches and the upcoming larger updates suggest Bungie remains committed to supporting the game through its early lifecycle.
Players can download the 1.0.5.3 update now. Those who enjoy close-quarters combat will notice the melee and Bubble Shield changes immediately, while the quality-of-life fixes should reduce some common frustrations during runs.
As Marathon heads toward the middle of Season 1, the focus remains on making each extraction feel fair, rewarding, and worth the risk. With more substantial content on the horizon, the coming weeks will be critical for the game’s long-term trajectory. Do you think it will be enough to survive or bring players back?
