Sonic Team Racing is Sega's new racing game featuring their official mascot—the blue hedgehog Sonic—that will be arriving this Winter for the PlayStation 4, Nintendo Switch, Xbox One and Steam.
Sega's new racing game looks very similar to the
Sonic & All Stars Racing series that came out a few years ago. In it, characters from the Sonic series crossingover with some other characters from popular Sega IPs like
Jet Set Radio, and
Space Channel 5—while racing on stages from
Super Monkey Ball,
After Burner, and
Golden Axe, to name a few.
During an official live stream, Aaron Webber from Sega's social media en PR team made a few comments about the game that confirmed
Sonic Team Racing as a playable title during this year's E3, as well as saying that the game will be very different than the
Sonic & All Stars Racing series with new and interesting mechanics.
Webber also mentions that Sonic Team Racing will feature more characters from the Sonic franchise than past racing titles.
"
Maybe there are some characters you have yet to see and play as that you haven’t been able to play as in a long time", he said. This immediately brings to mind
Sonic Mania Plus' new characters Mighty the Armadillo and Ray The Flying Squirrel, who had bee missing in action since 1993 that were even
featured in the latest Sonic Mania Adventures episode.
Sonic driving a car is another interesting topic that was brought up—and had been constantly brought up since the first Sonic & All Stars Racing came out back in 2010—and Webber had the perfect explanation for it.
"
So we’re going to set the record straight just in case. If he’s not in a car, guys, the race is over before it’s begun. You know this. You know he’s fast. He’s faster than cars, so we gotta equalize the playing field. So please, spread the word if you see anyone curious why he’s in a car, there you go".
Sonic racing games have been consistently good over the years so it is likely that
Sonic Team Racing will end up being a hit with fans too, especially now that the mystery behind Sonic driving a car has been answered although—come on—was it really even a mystery to begin with?
