Diablo V Confirms Demon Hunter, Monk, And A Brand New Plague Knight As First Classes

Blizzard revealed Diablo V's first launch classes: Demon Hunter, Monk, and the new Plague Knight. More are coming on the road to the spring 2029 launch.

Blizzard put names on the first three classes for Diablo V. The Forging the Next Era panel at BlizzCon 2026 confirmed Demon Hunter, Monk, and an all-new Plague Knight, then said this is only the start of the roster.

The official write-up from Blizzard's Blue post is short and specific. Demon Hunter comes back with twin crossbows, fights from the shadows, and leaps across the field to finish the job. Monk comes back with fists and holy power. Plague Knight is new. Blizzard calls the class the embodiment of walking death: it spreads disease and pestilence, then eats that blight for power.

Those three are launch classes. They are not the full list. "These are only the first of the classes we'll reveal on the road to Diablo V, with more details on their combat, progression, and build possibilities to come," the post says. The company also told the room Diablo V will ship with more classes than other Diablo games.

That last line is the one players will argue about until the next reveal. Diablo II launched with five. Diablo III launched with five and added Crusader and Necromancer later. Diablo IV launched with five and has been stacking more through expansions. Blizzard is promising a bigger day-one board than that history, and it is only showing three of them in 2026.

The setting is why the new class exists. Diablo V is scheduled for spring 2029. It sits about a hundred years after Diablo IV. Sanctuary has already fallen. Diablo rules from the throne of Westmarch and uses its people and souls as weapons in the Eternal Conflict. He is not a final-act surprise. He is in the story from the first hour.

You play the Heir to Westmarch, on the run through a kingdom that Hell has already claimed. A handful of humans escaped. Some bent the knee. A few became Dread Commanders. The Heir has a link to Diablo that makes them both a problem for him and an easy target for his influence.

Towns are gone. Strongholds do not save you. The replacement is a caravan of allies that travels with you through the wastes. Vendors and companions live in that train. Confirmed faces include a former Sister of the Sightless Eye and a Treasure Goblin looking for a reason to exist in a world where greed stopped meaning anything.

That is the map the classes have to work on. Demon Hunter is the familiar hunter in a place with no safe city to rest in. Monk is close-range holy violence in a land the Light already lost. Plague Knight is the new answer to a dead world: armor, sickness, and a loop that turns the battlefield into fuel.

Joe Shely framed the premise on stage. The heroes of the past failed. Sanctuary fell. Diablo won. The official post repeats that as the foundation for the next era, then says the team is still early and will keep talking as development continues.

Loot is getting pulled toward how it used to be in Diablo II on purpose. Gear can carry stat requirements. Big items eat more inventory squares. Belts are back. Sets are back. Runes and Runewords are back, with a crafting approach the team tied to Lord of Hatred. The stated goal is items that are readable, memorable, and worth chasing for hundreds of hours.

The world itself is not a fixed tour. Diablo is still twisting Sanctuary. Terrain, points of interest, monsters, and rewards can change when you come back. Ruins show what died. Corruption shows who is in charge now. Hell shows what is next.

None of that is a skill tree yet. Blizzard did not post ability names, resource systems, or how many builds sit under each class. Plague Knight is the one people will want footage of first, because "consume the plague" can mean a lot of different things. Heavily armored walker is the early read from the panel talk. The page itself stays on disease and power.

Diablo IV is not done while this one cooks. The same BlizzCon slate put an Amazon class pack on the Diablo IV calendar and kept seasons rolling. A Netflix animated series is in development. Diablo V is the long window. Spring 2029 is three years out. Platforms were not named. Check out the panel below:

For now the confirmed board is three classes and a promise of more. Two of them are old favorites from Diablo III. One of them has never been in the series. If you wanted a Necromancer, Barbarian, Sorceress, Druid, or Rogue on the slide, you wait for the next drop on the road to launch.

Which of the three are you rolling first when Diablo V finally lands, or are you waiting for the next class reveal? Let us know your thoughts in the comments below.
