Fans are getting an unexpected look at the Mass Effect game that will never be finished. A trailer for BioWare's canceled project has surfaced online, only a day after EA announced it was closing the studio, and a well-connected games reporter says the footage is legitimate.
Jason Schreier addressed the leak on Bluesky today. "Can confirm that this is a real trailer of the Mass Effect game that BioWare was developing up until its closure yesterday," he wrote.
We won't be linking to or embedding the leaked footage. It was never officially released, and EA and BioWare haven't commented on it. Below, we'll stick to what has been reported about it in broad terms.
What We Know About The Leak
The video reportedly runs about two minutes and carries the title Mass Effect Universe. If accurate, that would be the first time a name has surfaced for the project, which EA and BioWare only ever referred to as the next Mass Effect.
Those who have seen it describe a new protagonist rather than Commander Shepard, along with a returning fan favorite, Liara T'Soni.
It's worth stressing that leaked material like this is often unfinished, and there's no telling how close it was to a final product. Schreier confirmed the trailer is real, but that doesn't tell us whether it was intended for release, when it was made or how much of the game existed behind it.
A Look Back At The Official Teasers
BioWare spent years teasing the next Mass Effect without saying much. The project was first revealed at The Game Awards in 2020 with a short teaser that showed Liara standing on a snowy world and discovering a piece of N7 armor.
BioWare followed that with small N7 Day teases over the years. The 2023 N7 Day teaser was one of the most discussed, showing a mysterious figure in a long coat and sparking theories about a new main character.
If the leaked footage connects to these teasers, it would suggest BioWare had a clear direction in mind for years before the project was canceled.
Bittersweet Timing
The leak lands at a painful moment. EA announced yesterday that it was closing BioWare and ending early development on the game, and members of the writing team, including novelists Catherynne M. Valente and Derek Kunsken, have since said publicly how much they believed in the project. Valente put it simply, writing that the team "were working on a great game."
For fans, the trailer will be a glimpse of what might have been. For the developers, many of whom are now looking for work, it may be a harder thing to see. Leaks rarely show a project the way its creators intended, and this one arrived without any say from the people who made it.
Does This Change Anything?
Probably not. A leaked trailer doesn't reverse EA's decision, and nothing suggests the company plans to revisit the project. Former BioWare executive producer Mark Darrah has suggested EA could eventually look at selling dormant franchises like Mass Effect, but that wouldn't bring back this specific game or the team behind it.
What the leak may do is add pressure. Fans have been loud about their disappointment since the closure was announced, and seeing proof of real work on the project could make that frustration even louder. Whether EA responds is another matter.
The Bigger Picture
Mass Effect isn't gone entirely. Amazon's live-action series is reportedly still in development, and the original trilogy remains available through the Legendary Edition. But the game that was meant to carry the series forward is now known mostly through a leak, a few teasers and the words of the people who worked on it.
We'll update fans if EA or BioWare comments on the trailer.
Do you think EA should officially release footage from the canceled Mass Effect project, or is it better left in the vault?
