The Witcher began as a best-selling series of books by Andzrej Sarkowski but were adapted into a popular series of video games and even more recently were adapted for a small-screen Netflix series.
Released back in December 2019, The Witcher stars Henry Cavill (Mission: Impossible — Fallout) as Geralt of Rivia, Anya Chalotra (Wanderlust) as Yennefer, and Freya Allan (Into the Badlands) as Ciri. Lauren S. Hissrich serves as showrunner. Prior to the release of the Netflix series, one of its producers teased that an animated take on the fantasy IP was be in the works.
It seems we now know exactly what this producer was referring to as Netflix has announced The Witcher: Nightmare of the Wolf (via AnimeMojo). This anime feature film will release through the streaming service and bridge the gap between the first and second season of the aforementioned, live-action series.
Hissrich is involved with the project as well as Beau DeMayo — who wrote an episode of the live-action Netflix series. Studio Mir have been enlisted to actually animate the film — they're best known for The Legend of Korra and Voltron: Legendary Defender. While no details on the cast have yet been revealed, we can only assume that of the live-action Netflix series will reprise their roles.
The Witcher is an epic tale of fate and family. Geralt of Rivia, a solitary monster hunter, struggles to find his place in a world where people often prove more wicked than beasts. But when destiny hurtles him toward a powerful sorceress, and a young princess with a dangerous secret, the three must learn to navigate the increasingly volatile Continent together.
