The Legend of Zelda: Link's Awakening is the fourth title in Nintendo's acclaimed action-adventure
The Legend of Zelda series, and direct sequel to the critically acclaimed
A Link to the Past; starring the very same hero from the beloved Super Nintendo title.
Released for the original Game Boy all the way back in 1993,
The Legend of Zelda: Link's Awakening holds a special place in the hearts of fans, which is why they were ecstatic to find out that the game is getting a
full-blown remake for the Nintendo Switch.
In a recent interview with Kotaku, during this year's E3, Eiji Aonuma — long-time series Producer for
The Legend of Zelda — revealed that the reason why they decided to give
Link's Awakening a remake was mainly because the game is no longer easy to find these days; considering that we're talking about a 26-year-old game.
"
The original game was released 26 years ago on the Game Boy. Getting that Game Boy version is a little hard to do these days. So I’ve wanted to remake this game for a while. When I create a remake or reimagination, I don’t want to just make it completely the same; I always want to incorporate new elements. For even people who have played the original, I want it to be a fresh experience. So I was looking for that opportunity."
The Legend of Zelda: Link's Awakening is one of the most highly regarded titles in the series, rivalling other heavy hitters like
Ocarina of Time,
Majora's Mask,
A Link to the Past, and even
Breath of the Wild, so players who have not yet had the chance to play it are definitely in for a treat; long-time fans of the game, on the other hand, are likely getting that box of tissues ready for when they get to experience this masterpiece again.
Originally released for the Game Boy™ system more than 25 years ago, one of the most beloved games in the Legend of Zelda series returns. In this modern re-imagining, players once again return to the mysterious island of Koholint to guide Link on a perilous adventure.
The Legend of Zelda: Link's Awakening will be available for the Nintendo Switch on the 20th of September.
