A beloved classic from the Final Fantasy series is heading to television in a brand new way. EuroVisual Studios has officially listed Final Fantasy, Black Mages Legacy, a 2D animated series inspired by Square Enix's Final Fantasy IX. The project features 10 episodes, each running 22 minutes, and shifts the spotlight to the next generation in a story that feels both fresh and deeply connected to the original game's heart.

The series centers on the children of Bibi, the Japanese name for Vivi Ornitier, one of the most memorable and tragic characters from the 2000 PlayStation original. Imel, Koln, Luciola, Théa, Fala, and Doc are the last dark mages of the four continents. They live peacefully in the bustling city of Alexandria, protected by friendly locals who sometimes get a little too curious about their quiet lives. That tranquility shatters when Koln discovers Mel frozen like a statue in the inn where he works. The discovery hints that the tragic legacy of their father may be catching up with them, setting the stage for adventure, mystery, and emotional growth aimed at younger viewers.

This new direction builds directly on the themes that made Final Fantasy IX special. The original game followed Zidane and the Tantalus Theater Troupe as they kidnapped Princess Garnet, only to discover she wanted to escape her royal life. Joined by Steiner, Vivi, and Quina, the group embarked on a journey of self discovery, uncovering secrets about the Crystals and a malevolent force threatening their world. Vivi's quiet struggle with his identity as a Black Mage left a lasting impression on fans, and this animated series appears ready to explore what happens after his story ends.

The project has an interesting history. Paris based Cyber Group Studios previously signed a co development and co production deal with Square Enix to create animated content based on Final Fantasy IX for audiences aged eight to 13. The company planned to begin production by the end of 2021 or early 2022. Unfortunately, Cyber Group Studios closed its doors in April 2025. EuroVisual Studios now appears to have taken up the mantle, listing the series under the title Black Mages Legacy and moving development forward.

Final Fantasy IX remains one of the most cherished entries in the long running franchise. It launched on the original PlayStation in 2000 and has seen multiple rereleases over the years, including versions for PlayStation 4 in 2017, iOS and Android in 2016, PC via Steam in 2016, and Nintendo Switch and Xbox One in 2019. Square Enix celebrated the game's 25th anniversary throughout 2025 with new illustrations, a vinyl record release, merchandise drops, an exhibit, café collaborations, and even a crossover event in the mobile game Another Eden: The Cat Beyond Time and Space. Those celebrations showed how much affection still exists for the title's charming characters, memorable music, and heartfelt story.

Bringing Black Mages Legacy to life in 2D animation feels like a natural next step. The format allows for expressive character designs that capture the whimsical yet poignant tone of the original game while introducing a new generation of viewers to the world of Gaia. Alexandria itself, with its castle, lively streets, and airships, provides the perfect backdrop for these young mages to begin their own journey. The peaceful setting turning dangerous promises the kind of coming of age tale that blends wonder, friendship, and the weight of legacy.

Details on voice cast, exact release timing, or streaming platforms have not been shared yet, but the listing signals that production is active and moving ahead. For fans who have waited years to see more of Vivi's world, this series offers an exciting chance to return to familiar places through new eyes. It also opens the door for younger audiences to discover Final Fantasy IX for the first time, perhaps inspiring them to pick up the game or its rereleases.

The timing could not be better for fans. With the 25th anniversary momentum still fresh and the franchise continuing to grow through remakes, spin offs, and crossovers, Black Mages Legacy feels like a thoughtful way to keep the magic alive. Square Enix has shown a willingness to explore different mediums, and this animated take on Vivi's family keeps the spirit of the original intact while adding new layers of story.

Expect more updates as development progresses. EuroVisual Studios listing the project marks an important milestone, and many in the community are already speculating about how the children's adventures might tie back to Zidane, Garnet, and the rest of the original party. Whether you grew up with Final Fantasy IX or are just discovering it now, Black Mages Legacy looks poised to deliver a heartfelt continuation that honors the past while looking to the future.

The children of the Black Mages are ready to step into the spotlight. Alexandria awaits, and the legacy continues. Will you be watching the show when it comes out?
