BATEN KAITOS 3 Could Still Be A Reality If Fans Show Some Interest, Says Monolith Soft Artist

Monolith Soft's Baten Kaitos could finally be making it's long-awaited return if fans show some interest, according to Yasuyuki Honne—art director of the Baten Kaitos series.

Baten Kaitos: Eternal Wings and the Lost Ocean is a role-playing game developed by Monolith Soft and published by Namco that came out for the Nintendo GameCube in 2003.

The game would get a sequel a few years later in the form of Baten Kaitos Origins which, as the name suggests, was a prequel to the events in Eternal Wings and the Lost Ocean. Both games are turn-based role-playing games and had players using cards with different abilities and weapons during combat, making every fight slightly unpredictable.

Both Baten Kaitos games are considered not only rare, but also cult classics—possibly being two of the most underrated role-playing games on the GameCube. A third Baten Kaitos title was being developed for the Nintendo DS at one point but it was cancelled and the series has been on hiatus ever since.

Yasuyuki Honne, art director for both Baten Kaitos titles, has recently expressed their interest in making Baten Kaitos 3. The artist shared on Twitter a message explaining that he still wants to make a Baten Kaitos sequel but it's not up to him—encouraging fans to show their interest for the franchise.

"It’s been 10 years since the release of Baten Kaitos Origins and it’s pains me to continue getting requests for a sequel. Since enough time has gone by I think it’s okay to talk about it a bit. Right after the release of Baten Kaitos 2, I was working on a sequel at Namco (now Bandai Namco) and we were onto pre-productions, however before Baten Kaitos 3 could become a reality, talk between involved parties ended due to circumstances", explained Honne on his tweet.

"Had we released the game, it would’ve been something grand, and would take you to the bottom of the seas, the earth, and the sky. Bandai Namco still has a lot of my plan work that’s been sealed away. Those of you who wish to get a sequel, please let them know, at Monolith Soft as well as Bandai Namco".

It is worth mentioning that the first game in the series, Baten Kaitos: Eternal Wings and the Lost Ocean, was developed by Monolith Soft—which was then a division of Namco. Monolith Soft is now a first party developer for Nintendo and has no connection with Bandai Namco at all.

Let's keep our fingers crossed so that Baten Kaitos 3 finally gets that long-awaited sequel fans have been wishing for all these years; all they need to do now is show some interest and they might get their wish.
