Every time we know more about Masahiro Sakurai — creator of Nintendo's critically acclaimed
Super Smash Bros. series — we can't help to think that we simply do not deserve this man and all what he's done for Nintendo and the players.
In a recent interview with
Nintendo Dream, Masahiro Sakurai revealed that he once had to get an IV drip to keep working on the long-awaited
Super Smash Bros. Ultimate.
During the interview, Sakurai said that he got food poisoning from some food he didn't even have, which caused him to get an IV drip in order to get some work done.
"
When you’ve got symptoms like food poisoning, you definitely have to go to the hospital, right? I’ve had that situation once or twice before during development. It was like I got food poisoning from some oysters that I didn’t eat. It was like my food had come into contact with them or something", Sakurai explained by also adding that he does cook his food thoroughly so he doesn't understand why he got sick in the first place.
Sakurai was then asked whether he takes days off when something like that happens, to what Sakurai replied with a: "
No, I don’t. I just get an IV drip and go to work like normal."
"
I guess I’m a hard worker?", Sakurai continued as he lets out a wry laughter, "
I’m a freelancer, so I don’t have any strict rules on my time. As long as I can complete the game, I could show up to the office once per week and I think it’d be within the realm of forgiveness. But instead I make sure I come to work every day and write proper daily reports and such. I’m always working, but there’s a lot of things that keep me in good spirits!"
Long-time fans of the
Super Smash Bros. series know that Sakurai has gone to great lengths to deliver a quality product to players, putting his health at risk in order to meet deadlines.
Fans will remember that Masahiro Sakurai had a severe shoulder injury back in 2014, when he was working on
Super Smash Bros. WiiU/3DS, so they know how hard Sakurai works for the fans; something that everyone respects and admires him for. Once again, we really don't deserve Sakurai — but we're sure glad to have him.
