Before we begin, we urge you to take this information with a pinch of salt, but the latest rumour doing the rounds seems to suggest that Square Enix is currently working on the next instalment in the Final Fantasy series, and that the announcement should be made rather sooner than later.
As first reported by Wccftech, the information comes from Resetera user Navtra, who revealed that Final Fantasy XVI is not only real, but that it would also be a PlayStation 5 timed exclusive — which is more than plusible, considering that Final Fantasy VII also got the timed exclusive deal.
The user, according to Wccftech's initial report, may be somewhat trustworthy, as Resetera staff member Transistor has confirmed user Navtra does, indeed, has "knowledge into such subjects," making allusion to the information provided about Final Fantasy XVI.
Furthermore, and this is where things get a little bit more interesting, the Resetera user also claims that Final Fantasy XVI was supposed to be revealed during the PlayStation 5 event that took place in June, and that it is rather weird that it wasn't shown during the presentation.
"XVI is real. It was supposed to get announced in June's event. It's supposedly closer than most people would think. It has some kind of PS5 exclusivity (it was vague back then but it seems to be full timed exclusivity now). And I have no idea why they haven't announced it yet," read the users post on the video game forum.
If what this user is claiming turns out to be legitimate, Square Enix may well be announcing this game sooner than later. As unlikely as this may sound, this alleged Final Fantasy game may even be a PlayStation 5 launch title, and it may be one of the reasons why no official information has actually been revealed. Again, chances of this being the case are incredibly slim.
Final Fantasy XV was released in November of 2016 for the PlayStation 4 and Xbox one, and eventually launching for Windows and Stadia. Final Fantasy VII Remake was just released earlier this year, so fans have had their fair quota of Final Fantasy games, but a brand-new one may be a few years away from releasing; unless, of course, and as mentioned above, it is a launch title — which is very unlikely.
