In April of 2018, Sega announced that they were bringing the Sega Ages lineup of games to the Nintendo Switch — revealing that the first two games to be added would be Alex Kidd, Thunder Force IV, Phantasy Star, and the iconic Sonic the Hedgehog.
As of this writing, the Sega Ages lineup has already added 16 classic titles for players to purchase on the Nintendo Switch eShop, and the developer has recently revealed that the high-octane , and also classic G-Loc: Air Battle will be added very soon.
A recent interview with Sega Producer Yasunori Okunari, which has been recently translated, has revealed that the developers are no longer, or at least not actively, planning on adding any more Sonic the Hedgehog titles to the Sega Ages lineup of games.
Okunari does, however, tease that there may still be a chance for more games to be added — in particular, one that many players may have not even heard of before: the classic SegaSonic the Hedgehog game that released for arcade cabinets in the early 90s.
"When we began work on SEGA Ages for the Nintendo Switch, the amount of titles in development were limited, so we decided on a lineup that consisted of the first two entries in the Puyo Puyo and Sonic series. If this collection of SEGA Ages titles is successful, then I’d say we’d really like to consider releasing more in those series. The arcade game, SegaSonic the Hedgehog, has never been ported before...," Okunari teased during an interview with Game Watch earlier this year.
Like Okunari mentions, SegaSonic the Hedgehog was only released in 1993 for arcade machines and has never been re-released. While some players may still be wanting for Sonic the Hedgehog 3(or the Sonic & Knuckles version, rather), getting a game that has never been released for consoles before is definitely more exciting.
As long as there is demand for classic Sonic the Hedgehog games, Sega is open to keep re-releasing them as part of the Sega Ages lineup. If you're a fan of the Blue Blur, there's no better time than now to support the series; even if that entails purchasing the game for the umpteenth time.
