There may be some good news on the horizon for fans of Tenchu, as new information is leading fans to believe that the long-neglected series could be making a long-awaited comeback rather sooner than later.

As first reported by Gematsu, developer Acquire has filed a trademark for Stealth Assassins on the 20th of July. For those of you wondering, "Stealth Assassins" is the name of the series in Japan, since here in the West the series is simply called Tenchu; with the first game actually being called Tenchu: Stealth Assassins.

Besides the Stealth Assassins trademark being recently filed by Acquire, we don't have much information about what this could mean for the series, especially since the intellectual property is actually owned by FromSoftware; the studio that has published the games since the early 2000s.

As far as we are concerned, this new entry in the Tenchu series could well be a remake of the original Tenchu: Stealth Assassins, a proper sequel to the series, or even a reboot; one that could successfully introduce a new generation of players to the beloved series.

Tenchu: Shadow Assassins was released in October of 2009 for the Nintendo Wii and PSP, and it is actually the last entry in the series to be released. At one point, during very early stages of development, the critically acclaimed Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice was a Tenchu game, but the developers decided to do something different and scrapped their initial idea.

Before getting people excited, however, it is important to remember that sometimes developer file these trademarks but don't really end up doing anything with them for a long time. Hopefully this isn't the case with Tenchu, especially now that Sucker Punch's Ghost of Tsushima has proved that there is a demographic that can't get enough of the more realistic take on ninja/stealth games. Fingers crossed.
