Bethesda has made a rather interesting announcement, as they reveal that
Wolfenstein: Youngblood will be the very first game in the
Wolfenstein series that won't be censored in Germany; a censorship stemming from the fact that it contained Nazi imagery that didn't comply with German laws.
Perhaps the most interesting thing about this is that Bethesda was also working on the censored version of
Wolfenstein: Youngblood, as the change in Germany's rating agancy that made possible to release an uncensored version of the title was too recent to consider during the game's development.
Fans of the
Wolfenstein series have been aware of the changes made to the games in Germany, which completely removed swastikas in every single title, and has always replaced Hitler with some high ranking officer; to the point of removing Hitler's infamous moustache from
Wolfenstein II: The New Colossus in order to avoid any similarities.
"
Many games produced by creative, dedicated developers address sensitive topics such as the Nazi era in Germany, and they do so in a responsible way that encourages reflection and critical thinking. The interactive nature of games makes them uniquely qualified to spark contemplation and debate, and they reach younger generations like no other medium can," is the statement released by the German Games Industry Association when the new regulation was introduced.
Now that both the censored and uncensored versions of the game will be released in Germany, it will definitely be interesting to see which one sells best; considering that the new regulations may allow an uncensored version of
Wolfenstein: Young Blood, but maybe audiences still aren't too keen on purchasing it.
Welcome to the 1980s. BJ Blazkowicz is missing. His last-known whereabouts: Nazi-occupied Paris. The only ones who can find him are his twin daughters, Jess and Soph Blazkowicz—and no Nazi scum are gonna stand in their way.
Wolfenstein: Youngblood will be available for the PlayStation 4, Nintendo Switch, Xbox One, and PC on the 26th of July.
