The Avengers Project is one of the industry's biggest mysteries. Having been first announced back in January 2017, not much has been revealed since.
That could change within the next few days as Crystal Dynamics, the studio developing the game, will take part in a Developer Day session on March 19 at GDC 2019. Taking part in the panel alongside Crystal Dynamics are prominent game industry veterans Amy Hennig (
Uncharted) and Raph Koster (
Star Wars Galaxies).
Now, it should be noted that Crystal Dynamics' participation in the panel doesn't mean we'll actually see more of
The Avengers Project, but it's possible the developer will provide a status update on the game.
We thought we would see more of
The Avengers Project at The Game Awards back in December, but the event came and went with no such announcement. Sensing disappointing, Shaun Escayg, creative director on
The Avengers Project, did offer a brief update on the game,
assuring fans that it is still very much in development. In a tweet, he referred to
The Avengers Project as a "very ambitious game."
The scope of the game coupled with how late we are in the current generation of game systems, suggests that
The Avengers Project may actually be in development for the next generation of systems — or technology in general. If that's the case, then GDC 2019 could be the perfect opportunity to showcase the game as Google promises to unveil its "vision for the future of gaming."
A game based on beloved Marvel heroes, The Avengers project is being crafted by Crystal Dynamics – longtime developers of the award winning Tomb Raider series – in collaboration with lauded Deus Ex developer Eidos-Montréal. The Avengers project is being designed for gamers worldwide and will be packed with all the characters, environments, and iconic moments that have thrilled longtime fans of the franchise. Featuring a completely original story, it will introduce a universe gamers can play in for years to come.
The Developer Day session featuring Amy Hennig, Crystal Dynamics, and Raph Koster will take place on March 19 at 3:00 p.m. PT.
