Unlike previous instalments in the series, it appears that
Borderlands 3 won't see any new Vault Hunters introduced post-release. A fan of the irreverent video-game franchise recently put the question to, Gearbox CEO, Randy Pitchford: Will there be DLC Vault Hunters like
Borderlands 2 and
Borderlands: The Pre-Sequel had?
Pitchford (
@DuvalMagic) replied with what seems like confirmation that we will not be getting any DLC Vault Hunters. The CEO stated that he believes it would be more worthwhile the expand what the base-game's Vault Hunters can do, rather than add an entirely new character. Apparently, Gearbox are privy to data which backs up this reasoning.
"We are focused on the main game for now, but my feelings are that it might be better for us to put our time into expanding what the existing vault hunters can do and how interesting their future growth is instead of adding new ones to start over with. Data seems to support this."
Following this tweet, another fan put to Pitchford that without DLC Vault Hunters we never would've gotten Krieg or Gaige (fan-favourite characters from previous instalments). This fan also supposed that adding a new character would beckon more playtime from players rather than simply adding new abilities to pre-existing ones. Pitchford disagreed, as you can see below:
"That is true for some users, but my analysis of the data suggests the vast majority of players would benefit from expansion to existing characters ahead of creation of new characters. Now’s not the time for this, though, we have a game to finish!"
As you can see, currently it seems like a flat-out no. However, if you'd like new Vault Hunters to be added post-release, you can always keep your fingers crossed that they'll change their mind.
Borderlands 3 is set to release on September 13th, 2019 for the Xbox One, PlayStation 4, and PC.
