Fumito Uedy's masterpiece is till this day one of the most memorable experiences you get while playing video-games. The upcoming remaster made by BluePoint Games, the studio responsible for
Uncharted: The Nathan Drake Collection and
Metal Gear Solid HD Collection seemingly has delivered yet another model remaster of the game that was released twelve years ago.
According to the first reviews, the newest version of
Shadow of the Colossus is an absolute masterpiece. There's a lot of maximum notes and when your worst review gave the game 8/10, you know you did a good job. The game currently sits at 93/100 on Metacritic, meaning that it's currently the best reviewed game of the year, beating even last week's
Monster Hunter World!
In 2005 Shadow of the Colossus was a masterpiece and that remains so in 2018. This is one of the greatest games ever made and is an accolade that shows no sign of being detached from its monumental presence.
Still one of the finest games ever coded, and now fit to be seen on top line TVs. This is how remasters should be done, bringing the original content up to modern standards, without diluting what made it great in the first place. Bluepoint has effectively improved on perfection.
Whether you're climbing a colossus for the first time, or revisiting an old friend a decade later, the legacy lives on. Shadow of the Colossus is even more amazing today than it was when it first released, and earns itself a spot as a must-own for anyone with a PS4. I've never been as enamored with this game as I am in 2018. Bluepoint Games has successfully honored the original while completely making it their own, a balancing act that only the most devoted of fans could pull off. It's awe inspiring. It's colossal. It's the perfect remake. It's Shadow of the Colossus exactly as I remember it, yet it's Shadow of the Colossus like it's never been before.
The Shadow of the Colossus remake is "simply" the love letter from Bluepoint Games to Fumito Ueda's timeless masterpiece. In the work there is so much of that passion that you can safely perceive it in every single pixel that gives life to this production: it is not just a trivial polish of memories, but a tribute with all the honors of the case, the authentic testimony that with commitment, devotion and respect can be achieved results that even exceed the original work.
One of the most memorable adventures of all time returns with a complete remake that enhances the experience in all the possible ways you can imagine, not only visual: it even adds new content and tons of unlockables that will make fans and newcomers even happier. A classic adventure that still amazes twelve years after it's original release.
The original Shadow of the Colossus is easily one of my favorite games. It was among the first that made me want to violently point at the screen and yell, “Look! Video games are art!” at anyone within earshot. Bluepoint’s remake feels different in some respects, but is exactly like Shadow of the Colossus in the important ways. Scaling beasts feels appropriately epic, and the few story moments that exist still tell a heart-wrenching tale of sacrifice in the face of impossible odds.
Even as it shows its age, Shadow of the Colossus is still a classic, and worthy of our time. Should you feel an urge to go back to it, the remake is definitely the best, most beautiful version of the game to date.
Shadow of the Colossus releases on February 7th only for PlayStation 4.
